As an avid Star Wars fan, I’m hooked on the Disney+ TV series, The Mandalorian. If you have seen a few of the shows, you are familiar with one of the repeated quotes from the code of the Mandalorians: “This is the way.”
Recently, in one of my daily devotional readings, I discovered that this phrase is also in the Bible:
“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, “This is the way; walk in it.” (Isaiah 30:21 NIV)
The phrase “this is the way” is preceded by God promising to guide us. He says we will hear His voice behind us whether we turn to the right or to the left directing us in the way we should go.
But there is also a command in this verse “This is the way; walk in it.” If we want God’s guidance we must have ears to hear and a heart to obey. We can’t expect God to speak to us and then choose whether to obey or go our own way.
When God speaks to us through His Word or in our hearts, He always demands some action— obedience, trust, faith. He doesn’t want us just to know “this is the way”; He expects us to follow that way. And we know that His way brings hope, purpose and joy to our lives.
Lord, thank you for speaking to us and promising to show us the way we should go. Help us to hear your voice directing our paths. Forgive us when we hear, yet choose to go our own way. May we learn to trust you alone and desire to always walk in your ways.
