Eat God’s Food by Susan U. Neal, RN, MBA, MHS
Eat God’s Food is a fun, educational book to help kid’s learn about all the healthy foods God created for them to eat. From fruits, veggies, seeds and nuts to grains and seafood, a wide variety of food is covered. I love her introduction of each chapter and each type of food with the word, “Why.” “Why did God create fruits—because they are God’s candy. They are sweet and delicious and they give your body fiber and vitamins you need to be healthy.” It helps kids learn why they should eat those foods. Each chapter has a fun educational activity for kids to do and a “Let’s Cook!” section with a very simple recipe using the food in that chapter. The book is very kid-friendly with short sections and age-appropriate activities.

God, I Feel Sad: Bringing Big Emotions to a Bigger God by Michelle Nietert and Tama Fortner
I just received his book from Amazon today and am so excited for a book that doesn’t lightly dismiss children’s emotions, big or small. Written by a licensed professional counselor and a bestselling author, this book helps children put a name to their emotions by using words and pictures with lots of examples of how “sadness” might feel. The book reinforces that feelings are ok to have and gives children ways to cope with those feelings by sharing with someone, drawing, singing a song, dancing, etc. Most of all it helps children realize that God is always there to listen and help them through difficult feelings. The book also stresses thankfulness and seeing God’s goodness and many blessings. I love the additional parental tips in the back of the book for parents to use to help their child process their emotions.

Guess How Much God Loves You by Karen Ferguson
Guess How Much God Loves You is a great book to introduce young children ages 3-8 to God and the Bible. Lucy and her PaPa Joe are lovable main characters that kids will relate to. There are also fun animals for the reader to discover.
While this book focuses on the story of creation in Genesis, its underlying theme is that God uniquely created each and every person and loves each one of us. His love is shown in the beauty of His creation. It also hints at God’s love through Jesus who was sent to save us.
Luci’s Papa gives her a promise of more stories to come from the Bible in the future. This book is part of a future series of six books that will explore more adventures from the Bible. In addition to being beautifully illustrated, the author provides an easy-to-understand gospel message and questions at the end that parents can use for discussion.

What Happens When I Talk to God (The Power of Prayer for Boys and Girls) by Stormie Omartian
What I like best about this book is that it’s really geared to young children ages 3-7. It explains prayer in an easy-to-understand way. With examples taken directly from the lives of young boys and girls, the author helps kids get to know how to talk to God as a friend. It also explains how they can talk to God about anything—good or bad, happy or sad. It also shows kids some basics of how to pray—pointing out that they can talk aloud to God or silently and that can pray anytime and anywhere an that God always hears their prayers and cares about them. The book also introduces Jesus as God’s Son who came to earth so people could know more about God. I recommend this book as one of the best books on prayer for children just learning about God.
